User Services Assistant I
We are seeking a dedicated and service-minded User Services Assistant I to join our public service team. This part-time position plays an essential role in supporting library operations at the front desk, assisting users with their library needs, and ensuring that everyone who walks through our doors feels welcomed and supported. Starting Pay: $16.50/hour

Job Summary
Under the supervision of the User Services Manager, the User Services Assistant I provides front-line service to library users, including checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, maintaining account records, and supporting a welcoming, community-centered library experience.
Schedule
This is a part-time position with a 20-hour workweek. Evening hours and one to two Saturdays per month are required. Some flexibility in scheduling may be required to meet the needs of the library and community.
Primary Responsibilities
Please note that these percentages are subject to change based on the evolving needs of the community and library.
Customer Service & Public Engagement (60%)
- Provide respectful and professional assistance to users in person, by phone, and via email.
- Complete front-line user account and materials transactions using Sierra (ILS), including registering new users, updating accounts, checking materials in and out, renewing items, processing holds, and collecting applicable fines and fees.
- Guide users in navigating library services, spaces, policies, and procedures.
- Register new users, update accounts, and maintain accurate user records.
- Assist users with library technology, including printing, copying, scanning, faxing, and basic troubleshooting.
- Promote library programs, resources, and community services during daily interactions.
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment while upholding user privacy and confidentiality.
Materials Handling & Collection Support (30%)
- Process daily holds workflow, including pulling materials, routing items, and preparing items for user pickup.
- Prepare and distribute notices as directed (for example, overdue and holds ready for pickup), in accordance with library procedures.
- Retrieve, shelve, and shelf-read materials to support organization, accessibility, and a positive browsing experience.
- Assist with collection maintenance tasks, including shifting, labeling, and supporting weeding and inventory projects.
- May provide basic readers’ advisory support as assigned.
Professional Development & Team Collaboration (10%)
- Participate in at least six hours of continuing education and training annually (in-person or virtual).
- Attend team meetings and collaborate with colleagues to improve service delivery.
- Stay informed about library databases, electronic resources, and tools used to support public needs.
- Embrace cross-training opportunities and assist across functions when needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in customer support and/or administrative work.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Google Workspace.
- Familiarity with a variety of technologies, including internet browsers, digital resources, mobile devices, and standard office software.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to organize, prioritize, and multi-task.
- Must have or be able to obtain Pennsylvania State Child Abuse, FBI Fingerprinting, and Pennsylvania Criminal Background clearances upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a library or educational setting.
- Experience using integrated library systems (preferably Sierra).
- Experience handling cash and payments accurately.
- Experience working with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and lived experiences.
- Ability to provide instruction or support to users learning new tools or technology.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with both the public and internal staff.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
- High aptitude for customer service, accuracy, and problem-solving.
- Comfortable navigating technology and troubleshooting with library users.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all service areas.
- Willingness to adapt to new challenges and support colleagues across departments.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Standing or walking for extended periods.
- Bending, crouching, reaching, and pushing loaded book carts.
- Climbing stepstools or ladders; occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.
- Prolonged periods of computer use and visual focus.
- Ability to read small print and sort alphanumerically.
